Indian Foreign Exchange Reserves (Aug/14) 716.91B (Prev. 707.00B)
What it means
India's weekly reserve stock is a well-worn series: swings of this size in a single week typically reflect the RBI's intervention footprint, gold revaluation and valuation effects on the non-dollar share of the pile rather than any change in policy stance. The prior form here is a central bank that has historically run a two-sided smoothing operation, selling dollars into rupee strength and rebuilding buffers into bouts of depreciation, so the direction of the reserve series is best read as a shadow of recent FX flows rather than a signal in itself. What separates a meaningful print from noise is persistence: multi-week drawdowns have tended to accompany pressure episodes and concurrent forward-book sales, while steady accumulation aligns with surplus conditions and passive mark-to-market gains. A build of this kind is consistent with the RBI leaning against one-way rupee appreciation or simply revaluation; it tells little about tolerance at the margin. The follow-ons are the spot and forward intervention data that arrive with a lag, the rupee's traded range, and any shift in liquidity operations, since large dollar purchases can drain rupee liquidity and pull money-market rates toward the bottom of the corridor unless sterilised.
