Italian Economy Minister Giorgetti will be presenting to parliament a formal request to increase the deficit between September and October, following on from EU talks
Requests of this kind from Rome sit inside a familiar sequence: an upward revision to the deficit path agreed in principle with Brussels first, then a parliamentary ask, with the budget law following later in the autumn. The established transmission channel is the BTP-Bund spread rather than outright Italian yields, and what has historically determined the size of the widening is not the headline deficit increase but whether Brussels endorses it: episodes negotiated with the Commission in advance have tended to be absorbed as process news, while unilateral fiscal pushes have drawn the sharper spread response. The distinction worth drawing here is between additional borrowing that raises net supply of BTPs and a slippage in the structural path, since the former is a flow story and the latter feeds the debt sustainability arithmetic that drives the longer end. Giorgetti's prior form has been to work within the EU framework rather than against it, which lowers the tail of a confrontation with the Commission compared with past Italian fiscal standoffs. Worth watching is the size and stated purpose of the request when tabled, the Commission's public posture, and whether the update revises the multi-year trajectory submitted to Brussels, since that is what the spread has historically keyed on.
