[MARKET ANALYSIS] Oil futures are kept afloat in rangebound trade amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, while Trump announced the most crushing economic operation against Iran

WTI/Brent: WTI Oct'26 +0.4% / Brent Oct'26 +0.6%
- Oil futures are kept afloat in rangebound trade amid the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and with US President Trump announcing to conduct "the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale" against Iran, while US officials also claimed that the military has quietly established a shipping corridor in and out of the Strait of Hormuz to transport millions of barrels of oil each day.
Gold: -0.8%
- Pulled back overnight and returned to beneath the USD 4,500/oz level, but holds on to most of the prior day's spoils after surging yesterday alongside a weaker dollar and softer yields.
Copper: -0.3%
- Lacks demand following the recent sideways performance despite the advances in risk assets.
What it means
Episodes pairing aggressive sanctions rhetoric on Iran with reported measures to keep Gulf crude moving have historically produced exactly this signature: a geopolitical risk premium that props prices at the bottom of a range without generating a breakout, because the threat to supply is being simultaneously asserted and neutralised. The two claims in this headline pull in opposite directions on the same channel, the Strait of Hormuz transit risk, and rangebound trade is the standard resolution until one side of the pairing proves operative. The distinction worth drawing is between sanctions escalation, which historically tightens balances only gradually through enforcement and waivers, and an actual disruption to Hormuz flows, which reprices freight, insurance and prompt spreads immediately; rhetoric of either kind has tended to fade in price terms unless physical flows are measurably affected. The oil curve's back end and tanker rates have been the cleaner tells than the flat price in past episodes of this kind. The cross-asset read is consistent with the established pattern: gold retracing part of a dollar-and-yields-driven rally while copper fails to follow risk assets points to a market pricing uncertainty as a premium rather than as a growth shock. Follow-ons are any confirmation of the shipping corridor, the pace and scope of sanctions implementation, and whether official rhetoric is matched by physical market indicators.
