[MARKET ANALYSIS] Oil futures continue to edge higher amid ongoing Hormuz stalemate and with Trump said to have told envoys to halt conversations with Iran
Newsquawk Staff ·
WTI/Brent: WTI Oct'26 +0.9% / Brent Oct'26 +0.8%
- Oil prices continued to edge higher amid the ongoing stalemate regarding the Strait of Hormuz, with US President Trump recently commenting that there are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with Iran and that the naval blockade remains in full force and effect. Furthermore, Trump was reported to have told envoys to halt their conversations with Iran as the US shifts its strategy from “hammer Iran ASAP” to “strangle them” over time.
Gold: +0.5%
- Nurses some of the prior day's losses, but with the recovery limited heading into the FOMC Minutes.
Copper: -0.6%
- Declined amid the mostly negative risk sentiment across global markets.
What it means
Standoffs over the Strait of Hormuz have recurred often enough that the crude market has an established playbook for them: an initial geopolitical risk premium priced into the front of the curve, sustained only while physical flows are actually disrupted or credibly threatened, and prone to bleeding out when transit keeps moving. The distinction worth drawing here is between rhetoric and logistics: a stated shift from rapid escalation to a prolonged stranglehold implies a slow-burn supply risk rather than an acute one, which historically supports a lower but more persistent premium rather than a spike, with freight and insurance costs on Gulf loadings the cleaner tell than the flat price itself. The reported instruction to envoys to halt contact removes a near-term diplomatic off-ramp, which in past episodes of this kind has extended the duration of the premium rather than its size. Brent-WTI spread behaviour and tanker rates through the strait have tended to signal whether the market sees genuine flow risk or posturing. Gold nursing losses ahead of FOMC minutes is standard pre-event positioning, and copper's decline alongside soft risk sentiment reflects the growth-sensitive metal trading off broader tone rather than the Gulf story. The follow-ons are any change in shipping patterns or insurance pricing through the waterway and whether either side reopens a channel.
