Australian Consumer Inflation Expectations (Aug) 4.9% (Prev. 4.7%)
What it means
The Melbourne Institute consumer inflation expectations series is a soft, survey-based gauge and has historically carried less weight with the RBA than trimmed-mean CPI or the quarterly wage prints; the Board has repeatedly flagged elevated household expectations as a de-anchoring risk while treating any single monthly read as noise-prone, since the series is volatile and sensitive to petrol and grocery salience. A two-tick rise of this size sits well within the series' normal month-to-month range and has not, in past episodes, shifted the front end of the Australian curve on its own; what has tended to matter is the direction of travel over several months, particularly with expectations already running above the top of the RBA's target band. The distinction worth drawing is between expectations drifting while trimmed mean is easing, which the RBA has historically looked through, and expectations rising alongside sticky services inflation, which is the combination that has previously hardened the Board's rhetoric. The follow-ons that carry more signal are the quarterly CPI components, the NAB business survey price measures, and any RBA commentary referencing expectations explicitly. Until the hard data corroborate, this reads as context for the rates debate rather than a catalyst.
