What a Watchlist Needs
Following a theme such as US chip stocks through earnings season takes more than a few tickers. The watchlist needs the company symbols, the phrases headlines use when results land, such as “beats estimates” or “lowers guidance”, and the topic tags that catch the rest.
Built by hand, that means finding each symbol, phrase and tag yourself, and the Newsquawk desk may already maintain a list covering the same ground.
From Your Sentence to a Watchlist You Can Edit
Open Watchlists, choose Build it for me and describe what you want to follow. For “US semis earnings and anything on AI chip export curbs”, the builder reused two lists from the Newsquawk library, Earnings Season Movers and US Semiconductors, added its own phrases for the export story (“export curbs”, “export controls”, “chip ban” and “chip export”), tagged it AI and named it US Semis Earnings & AI Export Curbs.
It opened in the watchlist editor, as in the picture: the same editor as Custom Watchlists. As built, the parts are joined with or, so a headline matching any one of them counts. Switching the first or to and keeps only stories about a US Semiconductors stock or tagged AI that also carry an earnings or export phrase. Rename it, change the terms, choose a highlight colour and turn on alerts, then press Save watchlist.

What the Builder Does
Reuses the Desk’s Lists Where They Fit
The builder is designed to reuse lists our desk already maintains, such as Fed Speakers or Mega-Cap Tech, where they match what you asked for. When it finds one that covers it, it shows you where that list is and creates nothing.
Writes the Words Headlines Use
Where no library list fits, it writes its own keywords. In the example that is one row, labelled Together, holding four export phrases joined with OR, so any one of them is enough.
Keywords, Tickers and Tags
A watchlist can combine keywords, tickers and Newsquawk topic tags, with an or/and switch between them. The builder fills in whichever your description needs, and you can change any of it in the editor.
Yours to Edit and Save
Rename it, change the terms, pick a highlight colour and choose alerts by email, sound or pop-up; alerts stay off until you turn them on. Once saved, use it to filter feeds, or highlight it on the feeds that support highlighting.
