Context

A downside step in core HICP of this size has historically mattered more for the ECB reaction function than the headline print, since core services persistence has been the stated obstacle to a faster easing cadence through the current disinflation phase. The pattern in comparable episodes has been for a softer core reading to compress the front end of the Euribor strip and steepen implied easing odds, with the move typically largest when the print lands between Governing Council meetings and is therefore unconstrained by fresh guidance. The follow-ons worth noting are the country-level detail beneath the aggregate, since the distribution across Germany, France and the periphery tends to determine whether the hawks treat the miss as signal or noise, and the upcoming negotiated wage and services inflation components that the ECB has flagged as its preferred cross-checks. Whether this release shifts the tone of the next set of speakers is the tell; single soft prints have on previous occasions been absorbed as noise unless corroborated by the activity surveys. EUR reaction in past episodes of this kind has been second order to the rates leg.
