FAO Food Price Index (Jul) 131.1 (Prev. 130.3)

What it means

The FAO food price index is a monthly basket of internationally traded agricultural commodities, and month-on-month gains of this modest scale have historically carried little direct market weight; the series matters mainly as a slow-moving input into food CPI pipelines rather than as a traded print in its own right. The transmission channel runs from wholesale commodity baskets to consumer food inflation with a lag of several months, and the relationship is loose because the index captures export prices, not retail, and is heavily weighted toward cereals, vegetable oils, dairy, meat and sugar. The distinction worth drawing is between broad-based rises across all five sub-indices and moves concentrated in one component, since cereal- and oilseed-led gains feed through to emerging-market food inflation and import bills faster than dairy or sugar strength does. Episodes where this series has trended higher over consecutive months have tended to coincide with pressure on central banks in food-heavy CPI regimes rather than any repricing in developed-market rates. The follow-ons are the sub-index breakdown for the composition of the gain, the cereal supply and demand estimates that accompany it, and whether wheat and oilseed futures corroborate the direction. As a standalone release, the signal is incremental.
