PBoC set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7829 vs exp. 6.7238 (prev. 6.7809)
A fixing materially weaker than consensus is the part of the daily ritual that carries information, since the modelled estimate strips out what banks' submissions imply and the residual is generally read as the countercyclical element at work, or in this case its apparent absence.

The question the fix answers each morning is whether the authorities are resisting the prevailing move, endorsing it, or guiding it, and a set-rate weaker than both the prior fix and the estimate sits in the latter two categories. Historically the sequence matters more than any single print: isolated weak fixes have tended to be noise, while a run of fixes on the weak side of estimates has preceded sustained depreciation phases, with the offshore spread, CNH versus CNY, serving as the tell for whether the market is running ahead of official tolerance. The follow-ons are the next few fixes for pattern confirmation, the state banks' onshore presence at the session extremes, and any shift in the forward points or reserve requirements that have on past occasions been used to lean against one-way positioning. Note also that a weaker yuan fix transmits through the regional peer set, since the Asian complex has tended to trade off the CNY anchor. As a managed-rate signal rather than a free-floating print, the information is in the gap to estimate, not the level.
