PBoC sets USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7487 vs Exp. 6.6951 (prev. 6.7521)

A fix materially weaker than consensus is typically interpreted as tolerance for, or encouragement of, depreciation, whereas a fix stronger than models has historically been read as resistance to it, often via the countercyclical factor or state-bank activity in the spot session. In past episodes of sustained fix-model divergence, the signal has tended to be cumulative: a single day's gap is noise, a persistent run of same-direction gaps has preceded shifts in the trading band's effective centre and in CNH forward pricing. The distinction worth drawing is between a fix tracking broad dollar strength, which is mechanical under the basket-plus-fixing formula, and one deviating from it, which is discretionary. Follow-ons are the spot open's position within the band, the CNH-CNY spread as a gauge of offshore pressure, and whether the next few fixes extend or reverse the signal.
