Aflac (AFL) Q2 (USD) Adj. EPS 1.75 (exp. 1.76), Revenue 4.1bln (exp. 4.11bln),.
What it means
An essentially in-line print on both lines, and prints of this kind at Aflac have historically produced a muted first reaction, with the stock's direction set less by the headline EPS gap than by the items beneath it: Japan segment margins, benefit ratios, and the yen translation effect, since a large share of earnings is generated in Japan and converted back into dollars. The usual sequence at this name is an initial drift on the headline, then a re-read once the hedging programme and the USD/JPY assumption embedded in guidance are digested, as the yen differential has on past occasions dominated the operating story. The distinction worth drawing is between a currency-driven miss and an underwriting miss: the former tends to fade quickly, the latter re-rates the peer set of life and health insurers. Follow-ons are the call commentary on Japan sales, capital return pacing, and any revision to the full-year yen assumption. With both figures within a rounding error of consensus, there is little here to reprice on the numbers alone.
