As of Sept. 23, CENTCOM forces have redirected 115 commercial vessels to maintain strict enforcement of the blockade against Iran
Active enforcement of a maritime blockade against Iran by US Central Command marks an escalation from sanctions administered on paper to interdiction conducted at sea, a step that in past episodes of Gulf confrontation has been reserved for periods of open hostility.

The immediate transmission channel runs through shipping rather than through any statement of intent: diverted vessels raise voyage times, war-risk insurance premia and tanker rates on Gulf routes, and the effect concentrates in crude and product flows transiting or loading near the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of seaborne oil moves. Comparable interdiction campaigns have tended to follow a recognisable sequence, with boarding and diversion first, then reciprocal harassment or seizure of third-party tonnage, and only later any kinetic exchange, and markets have historically priced each rung of that ladder separately. The actors matter here: Iranian responses to prior enforcement pressure have typically been asymmetric and deniable rather than direct, aimed at raising the cost of the blockade without triggering a full US response. What is worth watching is whether the redirections are confined to vessels linked to Iranian cargo or extend to neutral flag traffic, since the latter widens the insurance and freight impact well beyond the targeted flows, and whether Tehran answers through proxies or through its own naval assets. Energy, tanker and defence names have historically been the equity expression of episodes of this kind, with broader indices moving only when the disruption reaches physical supply.
