Context

Spot premiums of this size over official selling prices have historically been a tell that term allocations are running short of actual refiner demand, and episodes of this kind have tended to cluster around either OSPs set below the market or a genuine physical squeeze in prompt barrels. The channel is the relationship between the Saudi OSP and the spot differential for comparable Middle East grades: when spot clears well above formula, producers have historically responded by raising subsequent OSPs and tightening term volumes, which feeds through the Dubai complex and the Brent-Dubai spread rather than directly into flat price. The actors matter: Saudi Aramco sets term allocations and has form in using OSP adjustments to manage the balance between market share and price, while Asian refiners paying up in spot are signalling run requirements that term supply is not meeting. Worth watching are the next round of OSPs, the allocation notices to term customers, and whether the premium narrows as November loading programmes conclude, since a persistent gap has in past episodes pulled OSPs higher rather than pulling spot down. As a spot market signal rather than a policy announcement, it describes current tightness rather than guaranteeing its continuation.
