GDPNow is a running nowcast, not a survey or a forecast with judgment behind it: it mechanically re-weights the high-frequency releases as they land, so a step up of this size implies recent source data, typically consumption, construction, or trade components, came in materially stronger than the prior vintage assumed. Episodes where the nowcast runs well above consensus have historically produced the same sequence: growth-sensitive rates repricing first at the belly and front of the curve, with the dollar firming, while equity reaction splits between the good-news-is-bad-news rate channel and the earnings channel depending on where policy sits. The distinction that matters is whether the strength is demand-led, which feeds through to inflation expectations and the policy path, or driven by volatile trade and inventory components, which have tended to mean-revert between vintages and are treated as noise. Worth noting is that the nowcast's own revisions are often as informative as the level, and large moves have on previous occasions partially unwound as subsequent releases feed in. The follow-ons are the remaining source data for the quarter and how official commentary treats a reading this far above trend.
