Context
Aurubis's annual European premium is the benchmark physical surcharge paid over the LME cash price by regional consumers, set each autumn for the following year's contracts, and it functions as a read on spot availability, regional demand and import competition rather than on the exchange price itself. The transmission channel is the spread between delivered physical metal and the LME reference: a higher premium signals the producer expects tight regional supply or firm fabrication demand, and it feeds into procurement costs for wire rod, cable and semi-manufacturers across the continent. It is worth separating this from the exchange story: physical premiums and LME outright prices can diverge for extended periods, and in past episodes premiums have risen while exchange prices fell when regional logistics or smelter constraints tightened local availability. The figure sits alongside other benchmark premia, notably Codelco's annual offers to European and Asian buyers, which are negotiated around the same season and often used as leverage in parallel talks. What has historically mattered next is whether major consumers accept the premium or push back, the outcome of the competing producer offers, and how it interacts with treatment and refining charges, which move inversely to concentrate availability and shape smelter economics. The move also has a direct equity read-through for the producer's processing and recycling margins, though the premium is one component among TC/RCs, metal prices and sulphuric acid by-product revenue.
