Tour the PlatformBusiness inventories are a second-tier input into the national accounts, and the swing from a positive prior print to a small contraction matters mainly for what it implies about the inventory contribution to the quarter's GDP rather than as a standalone signal. Episodes of this kind are read two ways: an unplanned drawdown accompanying strong final demand tends to foreshadow restocking and is treated as benign, while a rundown driven by weak orders and soft sales points to firms cutting production ahead, which is the signal of consequence. The distinction is usually resolved by the companion partial indicators, company profits and sales, released alongside, and by how the trade and retail data have been tracking into the quarter. In past cycles, AUD and short-dated rates have barely moved on this series in isolation; repricing has come when the partials collectively shift the expected GDP print in front of the RBA's stated tolerance for growth disappointment. The tell is whether the ABS and private GDP forecasts are revised on the back of this, not the print itself.
