Tour the PlatformAn essentially unchanged year-on-year print carries little information in itself; this series matters to the rates and FX desks mainly as a read on Australia's terms of trade, the channel through which bulk commodity earnings feed national income, the trade balance, and ultimately the RBA's assessment of the growth-inflation mix. Prints of this size, a double-digit annual gain sustained over consecutive months, have historically been consistent with a supportive income backdrop rather than a signal of momentum either way, and it is changes in the rate of acceleration that have tended to move the currency and the front of the curve, not the level. The more market-relevant question is composition: iron ore and LNG dominate the basket, so a flat aggregate can mask divergent moves in the underlying contracts that matter for export receipts. For the RBA, terms-of-trade strength has in past episodes argued for patience on easing by cushioning nominal income, but a single steady index reading has rarely shifted the policy debate on its own. Worth watching is whether spot and contract prices for the key bulks confirm or contradict the index in coming weeks, and how this sits against the domestic activity and inflation prints that carry far more weight in the reaction function.
