Australian NAB Business Confidence (Jul) -6 (Prev. -5)
A marginal deterioration in an already negative series is a second-tier signal; the NAB confidence read sits alongside the conditions sub-index, and on past occasions it is the conditions component, particularly trading and profitability, that has carried the weight for the rates market rather than the more sentiment-driven confidence line. Confidence at sub-zero levels has historically been consistent with soft but not collapsing activity, and single-point moves of this size fall well within the survey's noise. The transmission channel runs through the RBA's read on private demand: a run of weak business surveys alongside soft consumption data has in past episodes been the precursor to a more dovish board tone, with the front of the Australian curve and AUD the first to reprice. What matters next is whether the conditions and employment sub-indices confirm the direction, and how the survey stacks against the other partials due ahead of the next RBA decision. As a standalone print this is a tick lower, not a trend break.
