Context

Net exports contribution is a sub-component released ahead of the GDP print itself, and in-line results of this kind historically do little on their own; their function is to close off one source of surprise before the headline number, rather than to move the currency. The swing from a negative prior contribution to a small positive one is the more informative element: reversals of that size typically reflect the iron ore and LNG export volumes and the terms-of-trade channel that dominate Australia's external account, and a positive contribution narrows the range of outcomes in which the GDP print disappoints. The distinction worth drawing is between volume effects and price effects, since commodity price strength flatters nominal exports while it is the volume contribution that feeds the GDP arithmetic. The follow-on is the GDP release itself, where this component sets the hurdle for the domestic demand side; episodes in which trade adds while consumption or capex subtracts have tended to leave the RBA less moved than the headline suggests, since policy tracks the domestic impulse.
