Australian RBA Trimmed Mean CPI (Jul MM) 0.5% vs. Exp. 0.3% (Prev. 0.3%)
Australia's monthly CPI indicator is a partial gauge, built on a rotating basket rather than full coverage, and the RBA has repeatedly flagged that the quarterly print remains the policy-relevant series; monthly upside surprises have historically moved the front end and the AUD only modestly and with a tendency to fade unless the quarterly figure confirms. That said, the trimmed mean is the component the Bank watches most closely, and a sequential acceleration at double the expected pace narrows the case for near-term easing and pushes against the more dovish readings of the policy path. The distinction worth drawing is between a firmer month in a noisy series and a genuine re-acceleration in underlying inflation: the former reprices timing at the short end of the curve, the latter the terminal rate, and the quarterly release is what arbitrates between them. Follow-ons are the remaining monthly prints feeding into the quarter, RBA commentary on whether services stickiness is broadening, and rate futures pricing for the next meeting. As a single partial print the signal is directional, not decisive.
