Australian RBA Weighted Median CPI (Aug MM) 0.3% (Prev. 0.4%)

The monthly CPI indicator is the newer, partial series that sits alongside the established quarterly release, and the RBA's own communications have treated it as indicative rather than decisive given its incomplete coverage in early months of the quarter.

Context

The weighted median is the second of the two core gauges the Bank watches, the trimmed mean carrying more weight in its framing, so a step down here is read as directionally consistent with easing in underlying pressure rather than confirmation of it. The relevant split is between goods, where disinflation has been the established pattern, and services, where stickiness has historically been the constraint on the easing case, and the monthly print's value lies in which side of that divide the deceleration sits. Precedent in this cycle is that the quarterly trimmed mean, not the monthly series, has driven the board's decisions and the front end, so repricing on this print alone has tended to fade where it is not corroborated by the fuller quarterly data. Worth noting is how the release fits the run of monthly prints within the current quarter, since a consistent downward drift across the trim and median together has carried more signal than any single month.
