Australian Westpac Leading Index (Jul MM) 0.0% (Prev. 0.0%)

Context

A flat print on a composite leading indicator is a low-information event: these indices bundle components such as equity moves, dwelling approvals, yield spreads and consumer expectations, most of which are already public before release, so the headline number rarely carries fresh signal and the AUD and front-end rates reaction to this series has historically been negligible. The interpretive value sits in the composition rather than the total, since a flat aggregate can mask an improving rate-of-change underneath or deteriorating breadth across components, and it is the six-month annualised growth rate of this index, not the monthly change, that has been the conventional read on the growth trajectory. Readings at or around zero have in past episodes signalled momentum running near trend rather than a turn, and the series has a track record of flagging direction well ahead of the activity data it purports to lead. The follow-ons are the labour force release and the quarterly national accounts, which carry far more weight for the RBA path than this index, and any divergence between the leading gauge and the hard data tends to be resolved in favour of the latter. As a tier-three release, the signal is contextual only.
