Context

Baku has a history of this kind of arrangement: importing Russian pipeline gas to cover domestic demand while freeing up Azeri output for export commitments westward, a structure that has appeared whenever SOCAR's own supply obligations outpace production and storage. The mechanism is not new demand for Gazprom so much as logistics: Azeri exports to southern Europe run through the Southern Gas Corridor, and backfilling domestic consumption with cheaper Russian supply is the established way to keep those flows whole, particularly in winter when Caspian output is stretched. The sourcing matters: a single domestic agency report citing unnamed reporting is the thin end, and prior episodes of this kind have been confirmed or walked back in official statements from Baku, which denies that any such purchases are intended whenever the optics of buying from Russia become awkward given its own energy diplomacy with Brussels. The follow-ons are whether SOCAR or the energy ministry confirm, the volumes and duration if they do, and any read-across to Azeri deliverability into the TANAP and TAP system. As an unconfirmed report on a familiar arrangement, the signal is modest until verified.
