Barclays and SocGen forecast Fed rate hikes in September and December

Tour the PlatformSell-side calls for near-term Fed tightening land in the well-worn genre of bank economists front-running a hawkish shift; episodes of this kind have historically mattered less for who is making the call than for whether it converges with or fights the prevailing pricing in fed funds futures and the front end. A two-hike path implies a cumulative move larger than a single insurance step, so the operative question is what data regime the forecasts assume: in past cycles, calls for consecutive tightening have tended to embed either an inflation overshoot view or a judgement that the committee is behind the curve, and the market reaction has split between front-end repricing, where timing shifts land, and the belly, where the terminal rate assumption lives. Barclays and SocGen are both houses with established Fed coverage and a record of taking non-consensus positions; out-of-consensus tightening calls from major desks have on previous occasions pulled the consensus median only when subsequent data validated the hawkish read. The follow-ons are whether other houses revise in the same direction, how the call sits against the committee's own projections and rhetoric, and the next inflation and labour prints that would confirm or refute the assumed data path. As a forecast rather than a policy signal, the transmission runs through positioning and the consensus drift rather than through the curve directly.
