BoJ data shows an expected shortfall of JPY 3.38tln in money market conditions (exp. shortfall between JPY 2.32-2.6tln)

What it means

This is the Bank of Japan's projection of money market supply and demand, the arithmetic of note issuance, fiscal flows and maturing operations that determines how much the BoJ must add or drain through its daily fund operations. A projected shortfall is the routine case: it obliges the BoJ to supply funds via repo and bond-purchase operations, and the print matters mainly for the size and tenor mix of the operations it triggers rather than for policy direction. The gap versus the expected range is the relevant part; a wider shortfall than projected raises the prospect of larger or additional operations, which in the current environment intersects with the market's scrutiny of the BoJ's purchase amounts and any signal of further tapering in JGB buying. Episodes where the projection surprised to the deficit side have tended to matter at the front of the JGB curve and in overnight repo pricing rather than in the currency, unless read alongside signals on purchase volumes. The follow-ons are the actual operations announced against this projection and any deviation in purchase amounts from the prevailing schedule. This is operational plumbing, not a policy signal.
