Brazil's President Lula has 51.16% of the votes and Flavio Bolsonaro has 48.84% of the vote in the Brazil presidential runoff with 5.02% of ballots counted.

What it means

A tally with only a small fraction of ballots counted is an early-count snapshot, and in Brazilian runoffs the composition of the vote reported first has historically skewed the picture: faster-counting urban centres report earlier, while slower rural and remote districts, which have tended to lean differently, arrive later. Margins at this stage have on previous occasions narrowed or reversed as the count approached completion, so the gap itself carries less information than its trajectory through the reporting sequence. The variables that matter from here are the pace of the count in the large southeastern states and the northeastern interior, where the two candidates' support bases have historically been concentrated, and any early concession or challenge rhetoric from the trailing camp. Runoffs between incumbents or establishment candidates and populist challengers in the region have tended to price sovereign risk and the fiscal path through the BRL and local rates once the result firms, with the split congress typically the binding constraint on the winner's agenda. The next tells are the count percentage milestones, the electoral authority's calls, and whether either campaign contests the count.
