[CALENDAR ADDITION] USTR Greer is set to meet with some House Republicans today amid the escalating US-Canada trade dispute

Meetings between the trade representative and members of the president's own party during an active bilateral dispute typically serve one of two functions: lining up congressional support for escalation, or managing pushback from members whose constituencies are exposed to retaliation.

Context

Which one this is matters more than the meeting itself, since congressional reaction has historically been a constraint on how far and how long tariff measures against a major trading partner can be sustained. With Canada, the established pattern is that disputes run through tightly integrated channels, autos, energy, agriculture, and cross-border supply chains, so measures tend to draw quick targeted responses rather than broad escalation, and resolution has usually come through negotiation rather than attrition. For the currency, episodes of tariff escalation against a close neighbour have tended to be CAD-negative first and only secondarily a broad dollar story, unless the dispute feeds into a wider tariff programme. The tells worth noting are any statement from the House participants afterwards, whether retaliation lists or timelines emerge from the Canadian side, and whether the rhetoric shifts from dispute-specific grievances to broader tariff authority. Calendar additions of this kind are positioning events, not decision events.
