Context

The trimmed mean and median pair have historically been the releases the Bank itself points to when describing underlying inflation, and prints matching consensus on these measures have tended to leave the front of the Canadian curve close to unchanged, with any initial move fading as the detail is digested. What matters for the policy path in episodes of this kind is the trend across consecutive core prints rather than any single reading: the Bank has on past occasions looked through a soft headline when core stayed sticky, and eased with core moderating even while headline bounced. The distinction worth drawing is between the median measure here and the broader headline and common CPI components, since divergence between them has historically driven the reaction more than the aggregate alone. The follow-ons are the remaining inflation prints before the next BoC decision and any accompanying commentary on services and shelter components, which have been the persistent parts of the basket in recent cycles.
