Canadian PM spoke with Mexican President today, both sides dicsused the importance of renewing USMCA as soon as possible.
What it means
Bilateral leader calls of this kind are the standard precursor choreography ahead of a trilateral trade review: the two non-US parties align positions before engaging Washington, and the joint emphasis on speed signals both see advantage in locking terms before the political calendar complicates ratification. USMCA carries a built-in joint review mechanism, and episodes of this kind have tended to follow a familiar sequence, leader-level affirmation, then ministerial and trade-representative engagement, then the substantive fight over the contentious chapters, historically autos rules of origin, dairy access, energy policy and dispute settlement. The Canadian and Mexican read is that both have form for coordinating quietly against US negotiating pressure, having done so through the original renegotiation of NAFTA, when Ottawa and Mexico City at points held common lines against bilateral carve-outs. For MXN and CAD the channel runs through trade-policy risk premia rather than any immediate flow: affirmation headlines of this sort have historically compressed the premium modestly, while the durable repricing comes only when the US side of the table shows its hand. Worth watching is the US readout or its absence, since a trilateral statement converts this from positioning into process, and any scheduling of ministerial meetings. As it stands this is atmospherics, not substance.
