Capital One Financial (COF) reports August credit card charge off 4.16% (prev. 4.12% M/M); credit card delinquencies 4.54%
Monthly charge-off and delinquency prints from the big card issuers are the standard high-frequency read on US consumer credit, and Capital One sits at the more subprime-heavy end of the peer set, so its numbers tend to be treated as the early edge of any deterioration rather than the average.

A four basis point uptick in charge-offs is well inside the normal month-to-month noise these series produce, including seasonal effects around the August print, and the more informative signal is the direction of delinquencies, which historically lead charge-offs by a few months and so set the trajectory for coming prints. Episodes where card credit genuinely turns have typically shown both metrics rising in tandem across several issuers at once, which is why the read-across to the other monthly filers matters more than any single issuer's number. The distinction worth drawing is between normalisation from unusually benign post-pandemic loss rates, which the market has tended to absorb, and a fresh leg higher beyond prior cycle norms, which is what has historically repriced the consumer finance complex. The follow-ons are the rest of the month's issuer prints and whether delinquency formation confirms or fades.
