Context

China's monthly reserves print is read less for the headline stock than for the decomposition between valuation effects and actual intervention: reserve holdings are measured in dollars, so a softer dollar mechanically flatters the total while a stronger dollar deflates it, and a modest month-on-month decline against that backdrop is usually valuation rather than active defence of the currency. The line the market watches is the rough level that has historically been treated as a floor for comfort, since approaches toward it in past episodes have coincided with tighter capital controls, firmer fixings, and more vocal jawboning of the yuan. State-bank dollar selling in the onshore session, the gap between the daily fixing and modelled estimates, and the State Administration's commentary are the established tells for whether a drawdown is passive or active. For a number of this size the signal is incremental rather than regime-changing; the follow-on is whether the trajectory persists across subsequent prints and whether the yuan fixing starts to lean consistently stronger than survey. Reserves data of this kind rarely move markets on their own but feed the broader capital-flow narrative around Chinese assets.
