Codelco sets European copper premium at USD 350/tonne.

What it means

Codelco's annual European premium, quoted over LME cash, is the established benchmark against which much of the physical market prices term contracts for the coming year, and other producers' offers have historically gravitated toward it. The relevant read is the year-on-year direction of the premium rather than the absolute level: rising premia in past cycles have accompanied tight concentrate and refined availability, while flat or lower settings have signalled comfortable supply or weak spot demand. The level agreed splits the market by region and buyer type, since Asian and US premia, plus the producer's own China offer, typically follow on a lag and can diverge where freight, tariffs, or regional inventory positions differ. Negotiations with European consumers often run for weeks after the initial number, and the final acceptance rate across buyers has been the truer test of physical tightness than the headline figure. The follow-ons are the competing producer offers, the trajectory of exchange stocks and treatment charges, and any commentary from the major Asian smelters, which together determine whether the premium holds or erodes into the new contract year.
