Context
The split here is the story: core goods has re-accelerated modestly after a long stretch in which goods disinflation did the heavy lifting, while supercore cooled on the month but ticked up on the year, leaving the wedge between goods and services narrower than it has been through most of this cycle. Historically, goods prices have been the volatile, trade- and freight-sensitive component, prone to sharp swings around tariff episodes and supply shocks, whereas supercore, being wage- and demand-driven, has been the stickier measure officials cite as the truest read on underlying momentum. The transmission runs through the front end: a firm supercore reading alongside firming goods raises the bar for near-term easing, whereas a soft supercore month tends to be discounted less than a soft goods print because of its persistence. Three-month annualised rates of supercore, rather than the single monthly print, have been the more reliable tell in past data cycles, and a one-month deceleration following a hot prior print has typically been read as noise rather than trend. Worth watching next is whether shelter and wage-linked categories corroborate in the follow-on releases, and whether the PCE translation confirms or dilutes the signal, since the deflator's lower housing weight has repeatedly diverged from CPI at exactly these junctures.
