GEOPOLITICS
- US-Iran - US and Iranian technical teams were due in Doha for talks, and President Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are travelling, though Iran said no meeting with the US was scheduled, adding that the trip focuses on ceasefire compliance rather than US talks. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei said Iran “will not hold any negotiation meetings at any level with the American side in the coming days,” Tasnim reported, while other reports suggested US-Iran talks may occur through Pakistani or Qatari mediators.
- Hormuz - Strait of Hormuz traffic picked up after recent Iranian ship attacks, with around 24 commodity vessels transiting in both directions on Monday, according to Kpler. The ships included oil and LNG tankers and bulk carriers, with a combined capacity of up to 9mln bbls of crude, signalling increased confidence among operators, Bloomberg said.
- US Sanctions - OFAC launched a Reconsideration Portal allowing sanctioned individuals to petition for removal and request unclassified, non-privileged information linked to their sanctions determination. The US Treasury said the portal is intended to streamline petitions and increase transparency, as the Trump administration has loosened some restrictions on Iran, Russia, Venezuela and Syria while adding new ones for Cuba.
INDEX
- S&P 500 - BofA stays bearish on S&P 500, says take profits in growth and rotate into large-cap value. BofA keeps its 2026 year-end S&P 500 target at 7,100, arguing the bullish liquidity, buyback and fund-flow supports that peaked in 2025 are now reversing. The bank says investors should favour large-cap value and cyclicals, particularly Financials, Energy and Materials, as AI capex, manufacturing activity, benign credit spreads and lower oil support cash-generative “old economy” sectors. BofA sees weaker risk/reward in secular growth and hyperscalers, noting AI spending limits capex flexibility, buybacks are constrained by weaker cash flow, and investors are paying near-record premia for long-term growth.
MACRO
- US Labour Department - President Trump said he would nominate acting Labour Secretary Keith Sonderling to lead the Labour Department permanently. The role requires Senate confirmation.
- ECB - The unexpectedly rapid retreat in oil prices has eased pressure on the ECB to raise rates next month, though the case for a small hike later remains firm, four sources told Reuters. A September hike is seen as more likely than July, with markets pricing just a one-in-three chance of a July move, while June inflation data, due Wednesday, could shift the timing.
- ECBspeak - ECB President Lagarde said Europe is becoming less vulnerable to outside shocks due to better banking and fiscal regulations and progress on the green transition. Speaking at the ECB’s annual Sintra retreat, she defended June’s rate hike as a “robust decision,” not an “insurance hike”. Markets are still pricing one more quarter-point move to 2.5%.
- JPY - Japan’s FinMin Katayama said Japan stands ready to take appropriate action on the JPY at any time, after USDJPY rose above 162 to the yen’s weakest level since 1986. - Japan Auction - Japan’s 2yr government bond auction saw a bid-to-cover of 4.82x (vs prior 3.70x, and vs 12-month average of 3.74x). The tail narrowed to 0.005 from 0.02. BNP Paribas’ Ryutaro Kimura linked the strong demand to the government’s expected call for “appropriate” monetary management, seen as urging BoJ caution on further hikes.
- China Offshore Yuan Notes - China’s NDRC has asked some bankers to avoid underwriting offshore yuan notes yielding above 4%, and dollar bonds above 5%, according to Bloomberg. The move aims to curb higher-cost borrowing and excessive debt financing, particularly by local government financing vehicles, which have about USD 117bln of offshore bonds outstanding.

- Block (XYZ) - Upgraded at Piper Sandler to 'Overweight' from 'Underweight' with a USD 100 PT (prev. 58). Piper launched coverage of the payments and consumer finance group with a "selectively constructive" view. The overweight-rated stocks offer "durable" network activity, customer engagement, credit discipline, capital returns, operating leverage, or earnings "scaling into share appreciation without requiring broad multiple expansion". The firm believes investor concerns are legitimate, saying network volume growth has converged closer to the PCE price index, card issuers remain exposed to labor-market deterioration, and digital payments monetization is under pressure. However, valuation compression in the group "has been broad" while earnings expectations "remain resilient across much of our coverage". Piper initiated 'Overweight' ratings on the following stocks: Visa with a USD 394 PT, Mastercard (MA) with a USD 597 PT, Capital One (COF) with a USD 254 PT, American Express (AXP) with a USD 396 PT, Affirm with a USD 103 PT, and PayPal with a USD 42 PT (prev. 46).

Separately, Amazon agreed to pay USD 2.25mln to settle US claims that it failed to provide legally required records to identity-theft victims; FTC referred the case to the DoJ, and the settlement requires Amazon to provide business transaction records free of charge within 30 days of receiving a request. Oppenheimer recommends limiting exposure in the large-cap bank group to "the most boring and stable commercial banks one can find," which it identifies as US Bancorp (USB) and PNC Financial (PNC), adds that it would recommend investors redeploy the funds raised by selling in this group into the alternative asset managers, particularly Ares Management (ARES), Blackstone (BX) and KKR (KKR).
