MATERIALS:
- Gold - Goldman Sachs maintained its end-2027 gold forecast at USD 5,400/oz, saying tighter Fed policy should slow rather than derail bullion’s rally.
- China Coal - China urged coal producers to stabilise output and accelerate mine reopenings after thermal-coal prices rose to their highest since October 2023. Qinhuangdao spot prices have climbed 1.9% this week. Output has fallen following safety inspections after a deadly Shanxi accident, while generators are stocking up ahead of major holidays.
- Nucor (NUE) - Shares fell 1.6% in extended trading after its Q3 earnings outlook came in below expectations, with higher costs, weaker raw materials earnings and the absence of prior-quarter one-off benefits weighing on the forecast. Sees Q3 EPS between 5.55-5.65 (exp. 6.20); expects Q3 earnings to rise sequentially in the steel mills and steel products segments, driven by higher average selling prices and stable or higher volumes, partly offset by higher costs. Raw materials earnings are expected to decline on lower pricing and shipments. Nucor noted Q2 steel mills earnings included USD 130mln of cash refunds related to prior raw material procurement costs, with no similar benefit expected in Q3. Corporate and eliminations expense is also expected to increase, reflecting the absence of the Helion valuation adjustment and intersegment profit eliminations broadly in line with Q2.
- Steel Dynamics (STLD) - Shares fell 2.2% in extended trading after its Q3 earnings outlook came in below expectations, despite stronger steel operations and improving aluminium profitability, as weaker recycling earnings and fabrication margin pressure weighed on the forecast. Q3 EPS seen between 5.34-5.38 (exp. 5.60). Steel operations profitability is expected to be significantly higher sequentially, driven by wider metal margins, record shipments, higher realised steel selling prices and lower scrap costs, with demand supported by non-residential construction, energy, automotive and industrial markets. Metals recycling earnings are expected to decline sequentially on lower metal spreads and modestly lower shipments, while steel fabrication earnings are expected to improve modestly as stronger shipments offset margin compression; fabrication backlog is nearly +50% Y/Y and extends through Q1 2027. Aluminium operations earnings are expected to improve meaningfully sequentially on higher shipments, with all three cold mills at the Columbus, Mississippi flat-rolled mill now operational and the first CASH line expected to ship commercial material in Q4.
INDUSTRIALS:

ENERGY:
- Saudi Aramco - Saudi Arabia sold about 60mln barrels of crude from Ras Tanura for September-October loading via ship-to-ship transfer at Sohar, Reuters reports. Chinese and South Korean refiners are among the main buyers, with some volumes going to India and Japan. The additional supply has helped cool oil prices after disruptions at Yanbu.
- TotalEnergies (TTE) - Entered a partnership with Global Infrastructure Partners covering interests in certain African oil and gas infrastructure assets; GIP will contribute USD 1.8bln, while TotalEnergies will pay a throughput-based tariff for up to 15 years.
- Oil Price Forecasts - Analysts at JPMorgan said the Iran war’s endgame has become increasingly difficult to model as previously assumed economic red lines have been crossed. They estimate oil fair value near USD 90/bbl vs current prices around USD 104/bbl, which the bank says implies that markets are pricing roughly 4mln BPD of additional supply losses beyond 10mln BPD already disrupted.
HEALTHCARE:
- Novo Nordisk (NVO) - Entered a multi-target drug-discovery partnership with AI-focused Orbis Medicines worth up to USD 1.4bln to develop oral treatments for cardiometabolic diseases, Axios reports. GEOPOLITICS:
- US-Iran - Iran has conveyed conditions to Washington via intermediaries for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with minimum terms based on the “Islamabad understanding,” Al-Akhbar reports, citing a source close to Iran’s negotiating team. The source also disputed President Trump’s claim that Tehran directly sought renewed negotiations, calling it an attempt to influence global energy prices.
- US-Iran - UN-backed experts found reasonable grounds to believe US forces committed war crimes in Iran through indiscriminate attacks, Bloomberg reports. The panel examined strikes on a primary school in Minab that killed more than 150 people and on Lamerd that killed 22. The White House rejected the findings, while the Pentagon said its investigation remains ongoing.
- US-Europe - The Pentagon is considering withdrawing up to roughly one-third of US forces from Europe, though no decision has been made, NBC reports. Defence Secretary Hegseth is due a final recommendation on 6th November. European officials favour a gradual drawdown.
- UN Meeting - The Board of Peace will brief representatives from dozens of countries next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly about efforts to implement President Trump’s plan for rebuilding the Gaza Strip, the Times of Israel reports.
- North Korea - North Korea said US-led military drills are reinforcing its resolve to expand its nuclear arsenal. Kim Yo Jong accused the US of escalating tensions through multinational exercises with South Korea and Japan, and said Pyongyang would intensify its nuclear deterrent.
TRADE:
- US-Venezuela - President Trump is planning a possible meeting with Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez as early as next week during the UN General Assembly in New York, Axios reports. A senior administration official said nothing is finalised.
- UK-EU - UK Chancellor Healey will urge Brussels to include the UK in its “Made in Europe” policy and signal willingness to negotiate toward a wider UK-EU reset deal, the FT reports.
MACRO:
- BoJ - The BoJ raised its policy rate by 25bps to 1.25%, in a 7-2 vote, with dovish board members Toichiro Asada and Ayano Sato dissenting. Asada argued that with CPI growth (ex-fresh food) recently below 2%, the economic situation could not be described as strong, and favoured maintaining the existing guideline for money market operations. Sato considered that economic and price developments had not substantially accelerated compared with before, making a rate hike inappropriate at this time. The BoJ said underlying inflation is approaching 2%, and warned of a risk it could overshoot the target, citing broadening price pressures. In wake of the decision, the JPY fell vs the USD, as investors focused on the dovish dissenters and lack of explicitly hawkish guidance on further hikes. Daiwa Securities said the overall impression of the BoJ’s statement was dovish, noting that dissenters Sato and Asada, both chosen by PM Takaichi, suggest difficulties in raising rates further as new board members join.
- Japan Inflation - Japanese CPI was unchanged at 1.9% Y/Y in August (exp. 2.0%, prev. 1.9%), with the core measure easing to 1.7% Y/Y (exp. 1.8%, prev. 1.8%). The ex-food and energy component was unchanged at 1.9% Y/Y (exp. 2.0%).
- Japanese Yen - Japanese FinMin Katayama said authorities will work to maintain an orderly FX market and will not hesitate to conduct further coordinated FX intervention.
- US Fiscal - DoubleLine CEO Gundlach warned the next US recession could trigger a fiscal crisis that sends long-term Treasury yields higher. He said the budget deficit could reach 12% of GDP with annual interest expense around USD 3tln. Elsewhere, KKR raised its US 10yr Treasury yield forecast to 5.1% for end-2026, and 4.9% for end-2027; it expects the Fed to hike again in December and March, then hold rates through early 2029, citing persistent inflation, resilient nominal growth, large fiscal deficits and elevated term premiums.
- Chinese Yuan - The offshore yuan strengthened to its strongest level since July 2022, after the PBoC raised its daily fixing for an eighth straight session. The currency is heading for a seventh consecutive quarterly gain, supported by strong exports and conversion flows ahead of next week’s Trump-Xi meeting. The PBoC also injected CNY 463.3bln via seven-day reverse repos at 1.40%, and CNY 100bln through 14-day reverse repos; the liquidity operation comes ahead of China’s National Day holiday at the start of October.
- RBA - RBA Governor Bullock said labour market conditions remain close to, but slightly tighter than, full employment. She said some upside inflation risks are materialising as firms pass on higher costs, while growth and housing are slowing. The key question is whether existing monetary tightening is sufficient to return inflation to target.
The heavier macro content here, a BoJ hike with dovish dissenters and yen softness alongside fresh intervention rhetoric from the FinMin, fits a familiar sequence in which Japanese tightening episodes have repeatedly been faded when the guidance trails the decision, with verbal intervention warnings tending to slow rather than reverse the move. The steel guidance misses and the Saudi crude placement speak to two established channels: cost and one-off normalization in commodity-linked earnings, and supply management leaning against a geopolitical risk premium that bank estimates put well above fair value. The SoftBank margin-loan expansion and the SB Energy IPO scrutiny are of a piece with prior episodes where concentrated AI-related financing and listed-vehicle pipelines have drawn attention to leverage and collateral concentration rather than to the underlying names. The calendar items worth noting are the rating reviews on France and Germany, the rig count, and the index futures and options expiries, which have historically amplified late-session index flows independent of news.
