GEOPOLITICS
- US-Iran - The Pentagon is sending a third carrier strike group and additional Marines to the Middle East, potentially adding 10,000 troops by end-November. President Trump reiterated that Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon, must reach a deal or face severe consequences, and claimed the conflict could end soon, while alleging Iranian involvement in recent incidents at the UK Fairford Airbase, and an attempted attack involving a co-pilot who allegedly tried to crash a flight to Israel.

MACRO
- Fedspeak - Fed policymakers signalled little urgency for an October rate hike, with Williams (voter) this week and Jefferson (voter) yesterday favouring more data before the next move. Fed Vice Chair of Supervision Bowman (voter) also sees no urgent need for more rate moves this year. Markets cut the implied probability of an October hike to just under 30% in wake of the remarks from Jefferson and Bowman. Meanwhile, Fed’s Logan (2026 voter) said rates need to rise by at least another 50bps to make policy modestly restrictive and return inflation to the Fed’s 2% target; she called September’s 25bps hike a first step, said inflation may not fall much below 2.5% without further tightening, though noted that higher bond yields could reduce the need for additional hikes.
- BoJ - Japan’s Economic Policy Minister Kiuchi declined to elaborate on remarks at the BoJ’s September meeting that were seen as urging caution on further rate hikes, Bloomberg reports. The BoJ raised its benchmark rate to 1.25%, entering its estimated neutral range, while Kiuchi said specific monetary policy decisions should remain with the central bank.
- BoC - Senior Deputy Governor Rogers said interest rates should not directly target house prices. She said monetary policy cannot address housing supply constraints and should focus on low, stable inflation. Rogers added that housing should remain an input into rate decisions, while broader policy should increase supply and reduce reliance on rising property prices.
Context
This is a session-preview wrap rather than a single catalyst, so the useful read is which threads carry structural weight versus which are noise. The index membership changes (TWLO and a Corteva spin-off into the S&P 500, MRNA into the Nasdaq-100) follow a well-worn mechanical pattern: passive trackers rebalance at the effective date, producing predictable closing-auction volume spikes in the additions and deletions, with any front-running in the names typically unwound after the rebalance completes. The Toshiba HDD capacity expansion is the kind of supply-side headline that has historically weighed on incumbent memory and storage names on announcement, with the actual margin impact playing out over quarters as capacity ramps rather than days. The Fedspeak thread, officials signalling little urgency on the next move while one non-voter argues for further tightening, fits the recurring pattern of rate expectations being set by the committee's centre rather than its wings, and it raises the sensitivity of the session's factory orders print and any follow-on commentary. The export-control enforcement items on Nvidia chips to China continue a sequence in which each smuggling or diversion case has tended to precede tighter compliance demands rather than immediate revenue hits. Worth tracking through the session are the rig count, the EU diesel deliberations and whether the weekend produces follow-through on the Middle East deployment story, since geopolitical threads of this kind have historically been the ones to gap markets at the next open.
