Dutch Consumer Confidence (Oct) -34.0 (Prev. -33.0)

What it means

Dutch consumer confidence is a second-tier regional release that rarely moves anything beyond domestic assets; its read-through to the euro area runs through the larger sentiment aggregates, principally the Commission's eurozone consumer and economic sentiment surveys, to which national prints are an input rather than a driver. A one-point deterioration at deeply negative levels sits well within the noise this series has exhibited for an extended stretch, and prints in this range have historically coexisted with very different outcomes for actual spending, which is the channel that matters. The distinction worth drawing is between the level of confidence, which has been stuck in negative territory for a prolonged period, and its direction of travel, since it is sustained turns rather than point moves that have preceded shifts in Dutch consumption and, at the margin, the ECB-relevant growth picture. The more informative follow-ons are the eurozone-wide sentiment releases and the Dutch hard data on retail sales and household spending. As a standalone print, the signal value is low.
