ECB Consumer Expectations Survey (Jul):
Newsquawk Staff ·
- 1-year inflation expectation: 2.9% (prev. 3%)
- 3-year inflation expectation: 2.7% (prev. 2.8%)
- 5-year inflation expectation: 2.4% (prev. 2.4%)
What it means
The ECB's Consumer Expectations Survey sits in the second tier of inputs behind HICP and negotiated wages, but it has carried outsized weight through the tightening and easing cycle because the Governing Council repeatedly cited household expectations as a guard against second-round effects. Easing at the short horizon with the medium horizon steady is the configuration officials have historically read as consistent with anchoring, and a tick lower across the nearer horizons is the direction the doves on the Council cite when arguing the disinflation process is intact. The distinction that matters is household versus market and survey-based measures: consumer expectations run structurally above inflation swaps and professional forecasts, so the level is less informative than the trend, and the trend here continues to converge rather than re-accelerate. Front-end pricing typically responds only modestly to this release; the channel that matters is whether it feeds the quarterly staff projections and the narrative of the more cautious Council members. Worth watching is how the print sits alongside the next negotiated wage reading and the flash HICP, the combination that has historically driven the policy path rather than any single survey.
