EIA Cushing Crude Oil Stocks Change (Aug/28) 0.080M (Prev. 1.176M)

The Cushing print is a subset of the weekly EIA petroleum status report and on its own rarely carries the session; the market's attention sits with the headline crude, gasoline and distillate builds or draws and the implied demand and refinery runs figures released alongside it.

Context

Cushing matters specifically because it is the WTI delivery point, so persistent stock changes there feed directly into the front of the WTI curve: sustained draws at the hub have historically tightened prompt timespreads toward backwardation, while builds have tended to weigh on the front spread relative to the flat price. A near-flat reading after a larger prior build is, in isolation, noise-level; the precedent from past report cycles is that single-week hub prints mean little until they form a run of several weeks in the same direction. The tells worth noting are whether the Cushing figure corroborates or diverges from the national crude balance in the same release, and how the prompt WTI spread rather than the flat price absorbs it. As one line within a broader weekly release, the signal here is limited and the full report detail is the relevant follow-on.
