European ECB Consumer Inflation Expectations (Jul) 2.9% (Prev. 3%)
What it means
The ECB's consumer expectations survey is a second-tier input rather than a policy trigger; it has historically mattered most when officials were publicly debating de-anchoring risk, and in calmer periods it has tended to pass with little repricing of the front end or the euro. A modest downtick in the median expectation sits directionally with the disinflation narrative the Governing Council has leaned on, but the survey's noise profile means single-month moves of this size have rarely shifted the rate path on their own. The distinction worth drawing is between the median expectation, which garners the headline, and the tails and longer-horizon readings within the release, since it is drift in the three-year measure and the share of respondents expecting high inflation that has preoccupied the more hawkish members in past episodes. ECB commentary referencing household expectations has tended to be rhetorical cover for an existing policy lean rather than new information. The follow-ons are how officials cite the survey in upcoming appearances and whether it aligns with the negotiated wage and services prints that carry more weight in the reaction function. As releases go, this is context, not catalyst.
