Context

A monthly HICP print arriving without a stated consensus limits the read to direction: the rate has doubled versus the prior month. Month-on-month inflation prints of this kind carry heavy seasonal structure in the euro area, with holiday and repricing effects concentrated in particular months, so a step-up on its own has historically said less than the composition of the print. What has tended to matter for ECB pricing is the split between energy and goods on one side and services on the other, since persistent services and wage-linked inflation is what has constrained the easing path while volatile components get looked through. A monthly acceleration that sits in core and services has on previous occasions pushed back front-end rate expectations, while one driven by energy or seasonal items has faded within the session. The follow-ons are the annual rate and core detail released alongside or shortly after, and whether the next batch of national prints from the larger member states points the same way. On the bare monthly figure alone, the signal is incomplete.
