Context

Refining margin slumps of this kind follow a familiar sequence: weak cracks pressure utilisation first at the least complex, least integrated plants, and only if weakness persists does it reach the larger coastal refineries with better crude optionality. The transmission runs from margins to run cuts to crude demand, so a sustained squeeze on European cracking and coking economics typically shows up as softer prompt physical differentials for regional grades before it registers in flat price, since refiners buy fewer cargoes rather than selling paper. The relevant distinction is between a margin slump driven by product oversupply, which run cuts can correct relatively quickly, and one driven by crude strength against soft end-user demand, which tends to persist because OPEC-linked supply management sits on the other side of the spread. European refining has been structurally shrinking for years, so capacity closure talk tends to resurface in these episodes and is the tell that weakness is being read as secular rather than cyclical. Worth watching are refinery maintenance schedules being brought forward, run-rate disclosures from the majors at results, and whether the margin weakness is concentrated in gasoline or diesel cracks, since each points to a different regional demand story.
