Context
Final national CPI prints are normally a non-event when they confirm the flash estimate; the significance here is that the final reading has landed above both the consensus and the prior month, indicating a genuine acceleration rather than a revision artefact. French inflation has historically been among the softer prints in the euro area, so a reading of this magnitude narrows the spread to the bloc average and carries more weight in the ECB's aggregate than a similar surprise from a smaller member state. The channel runs through the front end of the Eonia/OIS curve and the OAT-Bund spread, with hawkish French or euro-wide surprises in past episodes tending to steepen expectations for the deposit rate path at the margin. What matters next is the composition, whether the upside sits in energy and administered prices, which the ECB has historically looked through, or in services and core, which it has not. The immediate follow-on is the harmonised HICP read and then the euro-area aggregate, where French and German prints together dominate the surprise risk. A single national print rarely shifts the policy debate on its own, but it raises the bar for the doves at the next Governing Council meeting.
