French HICP Preliminary (Aug MM) 0.8% (Prev. 0.6%)
French preliminary HICP is one of the earlier national reads in the euro area inflation round, arriving alongside or just ahead of the other large member states and before the bloc-wide flash estimate, so it has historically served as a first steer on the aggregate print rather than a market mover in its own right. The monthly tick higher in the harmonised measure matters less than the year-on-year rate and the composition beneath it: energy base effects and administered or seasonal items, notably regulated tariffs and summer sales timing, have repeatedly driven French headline prints in either direction without signalling anything about the underlying trend the ECB actually reacts to. The distinction worth drawing is between a move driven by volatile components, which tends to fade from the pricing of the policy path within the session, and one showing up in services and core, which is what has historically shifted rate expectations. The transmission runs through the front of the EUR curve and OIS pricing for the next ECB meetings, and through OAT-Bund only at the margin given that national inflation surprises rarely move the spread absent a fiscal or political overlay. The follow-ons are the other national flash prints and the euro area aggregate, which is where any signal gets confirmed or diluted.
