French HICP Preliminary (Aug YY) 2.7% (Prev. 2.4%)
Preliminary HICP prints from the larger euro area economies have historically served as the reliable steer for the euro area aggregate flash release that follows, with France and Germany together accounting for a large share of the bloc's basket, so an acceleration of this size in France tends to shift expectations for the aggregate in the same direction. The distinction that matters is composition: a rise driven by energy base effects or administered prices has tended to be discounted at the ECB, while a pickup broad-based across services and core goods is what has historically moved the pricing of the policy path, chiefly at the front end via the meeting-by-meeting rate expectations. French inflation has also tended to run structurally below the bloc average given regulated energy pricing, so an upside surprise there carries somewhat more signal about underlying breadth than the same surprise from a higher-inflation member state. Worth watching are the breakdown between core, services and energy in the detailed release, the parallel prints from the other large member states on the same calendar, and whether officials subsequently lean on the aggregate or dismiss it as base effects. As a single preliminary national print, the signal is directional for the aggregate rather than decisive for policy.
