French President Macron says France has been targeted by Russian hybrid attacks in recent weeks
Public attribution of hybrid activity to Moscow by a head of state follows an established pattern: such statements tend to come after intelligence has been gathered and, on past occasions, have preceded coordinated responses across EU and NATO channels rather than unilateral French action.

Hybrid campaigns of this kind, spanning cyber intrusions, disinformation, infrastructure probing and sabotage, have historically escalated in step with European support for Ukraine, and France has been among the more prominent targets given its posture within the alliance. The operative question is whether the rhetoric signals an operational response in train: prior episodes have typically been followed by indictments or expulsions of diplomats, sanctions designations, or a joint attribution statement with allies, each carrying a different escalation weight. Attribution alone, without follow-through, has tended to fade within days and leave assets untouched. The transmission channel on escalation has run through European gas and power benchmarks, defence names, and at the margin the euro and core peripheral spreads, rather than through global risk. The tells are whether other European governments echo the attribution, whether NATO articles or EU solidarity mechanisms are invoked, and any concrete incidents, cables, pipelines or networks, that surface to substantiate the claim.
