Context

Final PMI prints rarely reprice anything on their own; the survey's first release has already been absorbed, and revisions between flash and final in the French series have historically been small enough that the market treats the final as confirmation rather than information. The substance here is the prior month's jump from contractionary territory back above 50, which is the kind of sharp swing that soft surveys produce around holiday-affected months and political noise, and which has tended to invite scepticism until corroborated by the hard data. French services is the dominant weight in the domestic economy, so the direction of travel matters more for the ECB-relevant growth narrative than the decimal-point miss against consensus; French data has fed into the euro through the front end and through OAT-bund spreads when fiscal or political stress has been live. The distinction worth drawing is between survey strength driven by new orders, which has historically persisted, and strength driven by backlogs or sentiment, which has faded. Follow-ons are the composite read across the euro area, the INSEE and hard-activity prints that test whether the survey bounce is real, and any ECB commentary that references French momentum.
