Context

Final readings of a national HICP print almost never move markets on their own; the number was set by the flash estimate and by the state-level releases that precede it, so an in-line confirmation is largely a formality. The step up from the prior reading to the current one was already visible in the flash data and in the component states, and episodes of this kind have tended to reflect base effects in energy and administered prices washing out of the year-ago comparison rather than a fresh acceleration in underlying momentum. What matters for the transmission into Bunds and the euro is not the German headline but how the national prints aggregate into the euro-area HICP, since the ECB reacts to the bloc-wide figure and its core and services components rather than to any single member state. The distinction worth drawing is between headline firmness driven by energy base effects, which rate markets have historically looked through, and firmness in services, which has carried more weight with the Governing Council in past cycles. The follow-ons of note are the euro-area aggregate and any commentary from ECB officials on whether the pick-up is viewed as transitory arithmetic or as evidence of sticky domestic pricing.
