Context

An upward revision of this size from Ifo is notable less for the number itself than for what it signals about the institute's read on the German industrial cycle: forecast upgrades of this kind from the major German institutes have historically clustered around turning points where fiscal stimulus expectations, easing credit conditions, or a bottoming in manufacturing orders feed through with a lag. The distinction worth drawing is between a forecast driven by external demand assumptions and one built on domestic fiscal expansion, since the former fades quickly if global trade softens while the latter tends to be stickier and carries implications for Bund supply. Revisions of this magnitude have on previous occasions preceded shifts in the consensus narrative more than they have repriced the euro directly, with the transmission running through rate differentials at the front end if the ECB is perceived to have less room to ease. The follow-ons worth noting are whether the other German institutes and the European Commission move in the same direction on their next updates, and whether the Ifo survey components themselves corroborate the upgrade, since a forecast raised ahead of the underlying survey data has historically been the less durable kind. As a research house projection rather than a hard print, the signal is directional and revision-prone.
