Context
VDMA orders are the longest-running read on German capital goods demand and historically lead the official factory orders and industrial production prints for the machinery segment, making them a useful cross-check rather than a primary market mover. The split here is the familiar one: strength concentrated in foreign orders against a contracting domestic intake, a pattern that has recurred through periods when German industry was being carried by external demand while domestic investment lagged. Export-led machinery orders of this kind track global capex cycles and tend to be sensitive to the exchange rate and Chinese and US industrial demand, whereas the domestic component maps more directly to the internal investment climate and financing conditions. A three-month rolling window also smooths the monthly volatility that has made single factory order prints unreliable signals in past cycles. The follow-ons are the official orders and Ifo readings for confirmation, and whether the domestic series turns, since sustained export-only strength has historically faded into weaker overall industrial output rather than broadened. As a second-tier release, EUR and Bund reaction to VDMA alone has typically been negligible absent a large surprise against trend.
